The Benefits of Invisalign® / Suresmile®
October 9, 2024What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a method used to help patients relax and feel more comfortable when having a dental procedure done. This is a very common process, and one that we offer at Newtown Smile Dentistry. There are different types of sedation dentistry provided by dental practices, but at our office, we offer three types:
Minimal Sedation – This is a good sedation method to use if you don’t want to be put fully under and would prefer to stay awake during the procedure. Using this method, we will administer nitrous oxide, which you might have heard referred to as “laughing gas”. You will remain awake, but you will be in a comfortable and relaxed state.
Moderate Sedation – This method of sedation is useful if you would prefer to not go fully under, but don’t want to have a memory of the procedure. Moderate sedation will be administered either intravenously or through inhalation. Once it takes effect, you’ll still be awake and be able to respond to small verbal requests, but you’ll feel calm and drowsy.
Deep Sedation – If you don’t want to be awake at all during a dental procedure, then deep sedation is the method of choice for you. This is administered intravenously, and will put you fully under, making you unconscious during the entire procedure.
Regardless of your preference, each option is fully safe and administered by a trained professional.
When Is It Beneficial To Use Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is beneficial in many different scenarios, and below are some of the most common:
Dental Anxiety – Patients with severe dental anxiety typically find sedation dentistry most beneficial. Any of the methods mentioned above will help to calm anxiety and relieve worry. The stress relief will not only help the patient relax, but it will allow the dentist to have an easier time performing the procedure and avoid any complications.
Pediatric Dentistry – Many adults have a fear of the dentist, and this is even more common see cw among children. using sedation dentistry will help to make the process less scary for them and upn(f hopefully avoid being scarred from dental procedures when they grow up.
Low Pain Threshold – Understandably, certain people have lower pain thresholds than others. A Novocain shot, a tooth being extracted, or drilling is too much for some people to handle. In this situation, sedation dentistry would be a great option. You’ll be able to relax during the procedure without the constant fear of being in pain.
